Here are ten that you might’ve heard, and believed…that it’s time to rethink.
Buffing back your skin by buffing back the myths.
The 10 Skincare Myths You Can Finally Forget…In No Particular Order
Myth #1: Stick to one brand—don’t mix and match.
This one’s a classic marketing move, often pitched with a line like, “our products are designed to work in harmony.” But the truth? Skincare is personal, and the best routine is tailored to your skin’s specific needs, not one brand’s catalogue. Your skin deserves ingredients that serve you, regardless of the label.

Myth #2: If it works for my friend, it’ll work for me.
Tempting as it is to borrow from a friend’s holy grail routine, your skin is as unique as your fingerprint. In fact, our Script technology can identify over 13,000 unique skin profile combinations! That means your bestie’s miracle serum might do nothing (or worse) for you. Think of it this way, you wouldn’t take medical advice from anyone but a doctor, right? Treat your skin the same way and consult a professional to find the products that truly match your skin.
Myth #3: Sunscreen is only for summer.
This one’s a biggie. According to Script’s founder, Professor Greg Goodman AM, renowned dermatologist and recipient of the Order of Australia for his work in medicine and skin research, sunscreen is a year-round must.
“Even in winter, harmful UVA rays and other types of light penetrate your skin,” he says. “A daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is one of the simplest yet most powerful tools in your routine. Rain, shine, or snow – don’t skip it.”
We even stock some sunscreens that protect against blue light…because screen time never stops.
Myth #4: Use hot water to ‘open’ your pores and cleanse deeply.
Nope, your pores don’t have tiny doors that open and close. While hot water might feel like it’s doing something good, it can actually damage sensitive skin and worsen conditions like rosacea or broken capillaries. Stick with lukewarm water for a gentle but effective cleanse.
Myth #5: Soap works just fine as a cleanser.
Soap might seem like a simple option, but your skin deserves better.
“Soap is highly alkaline, while your skin is naturally acidic,” says Professor Goodman AM.
This mismatch can strip away healthy oils, leaving your skin dry and unbalanced. That squeaky-clean feeling? It’s a red flag, not a goal. A well-formulated cleanser that matches your skin profile will keep things balanced and allow your other products to do their job more effectively.
Myth #6: Oily skin shouldn’t use oils or moisturise much.
It might seem counterintuitive, but oily skin still needs hydration. In fact, skipping moisturisers or using harsh, oil-stripping products can backfire drying out your skin and prompting it to produce more oil to compensate. Look for products with hydrating ingredients that suit your skin type, including certain oil-based cleansers that work by attracting excess oil (yes, really!).
Myth #7: Toners are a skincare essential.
Toners once had their moment, but skincare has come a long way. Most traditional toners are astringent and overly drying, especially after cleansing.
“They often strip the skin of its protective oils unnecessarily,” warns Professor Goodman AM.
Instead try skin-balancing products with pre, post or probiotics to support your microbiome and prep your skin more gently.
Myth #8: Sensitive skin types should skip exfoliation.
We get the hesitation, especially with harsh scrubs. But exfoliation, done right, can be incredibly beneficial, even for sensitive skin. Gentle chemical exfoliants like AHAs help remove dead skin cells, smooth texture, and boost absorption of other products. The key is using the right kind and frequency for your skin profile.
Myth #9: Your skin type never changes.
Here’s the truth – your skin is constantly evolving. Hormones, age, climate, stress, and lifestyle all play a role. Many people think they’re still “oily” because they had acne in their teens, when in reality, their skin might now be dry or dehydrated. Tune into your skin and adjust your routine with the seasons, and as your life changes. Paying attention to your skin goes a long way.
Myth #10: Retinols thin your skin.
This is a common misconception, but it couldn’t be further from the truth. Retinoids stimulate collagen production, helping the skin become firmer, plumper, and better hydrated over time. That increased cell turnover… it’s a good thing! It means fresh, healthy skin is making its way to the surface.
Skincare doesn’t need to be complicated, it just needs to be yours! The more you understand your skin, the easier it becomes to care for it with intention.
So, let’s leave these myths in the past where they belong and move forward with science, strategy, and a little more attention given to how your skin is feeling.
